I so look forward to being invited to the JFK Library for an event (RFK Children's Action Corps) that honors people who have vision and determination. Their speeches are never ordinary. I took a photo as we entered on yesterday's dreary evening.
Actually, I was surprised that I was allowed so freely to rummage through my bag and come up with a camera for this photo, considering the earlier events of the day in Washington DC when some hateful white supremacist opened fire on innocent people at the Holocaust Museum. I thought that there would be increased security but in fact, all we encountered was one genial security guard.
Dr. G and his wife, Dr. S invite us, as he said, "As friends, as good company, and also, as people dedicated to children's welfare." The pieces all fit together as the speakers come to the podium. Joseph P. Kennedy, grandson of RFK, presented the awards. He is a young man who seems to possess the family zeal for social commitment as well as possessing very characteristic Kennedy handsomeness.
The keynote speaker was John Seigenthaler and he showered us with memories of the civil rights movement and his experiences with RFK and Martin Luther King. It is very special to be enveloped in someone's memories and to be transported to a different era. The award recipients were worthy and humbled to have their efforts brought to the limelight. The speeches went late into the evening but were well worth listening to.
We have our invitation for next year assured by our hosts. Dr. G has become a powerful figure here and many people came to our table to pay him obeisance. He is very relaxed with his friends and we laughed when he called Dad an asshole for bringing Jackie home and complicating my life.
